As the 1950s bled into the 1960s, a decade of assassinations and the escalating American war in Southeast Asia, many women turned to antiwar organizing through groups like Women Strike for Peace. They marched against atomic-bomb testing in the American West, which had caused radioactivity in milk sold to their children; they held aloft posters with the famous art slogan developed by Lorraine Schneider, “War is not healthy for children and other living things.” Yet as Betty Friedan would soon point out in her 1963 bestseller The Feminine Mystique, being an educated mother or former World War II worker did not guarantee that women’s concerns would be heard, let alone taken seriously. The female half of the population still lacked political credibility, clout, and representation. But that was about to change.
